Netflix share trailer for new Beyoncé Documentary 'Homecoming' - elle.com

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT

In a move that, in our humble opinion, is long overdue, a Beyoncé documentary is coming.

Following rumblings online last week that a documentary was on it way, Netflix has confirmed the news with a trailer.

The clip - which features the voice of poet Maya Angelou - comes after the streaming service teased a simple still on their Twitter account with the words Homecoming on Sunday (April 7). This subsequently was all the proof the Beyhive needed to piece together clues that a Bey x Netflix doc really was impending.

Here's everything we know so far...

What is the documentary about?

Judging from the few clues we've got from the trailer, the documentary will mainly focus on the singer's Coachella performance, which marked the first time a black woman had ever headlined the internationally-renowned music festival. The electric set was praised by fans and critics alike, partly due to its thematic tribute to African-American universities and education.

The name of the documentary, Homecoming, takes the name from Beyoncé's scholarship fund which she set up in the aftermath of her April 2018 performance.

The Homecoming Scholars Award Program pledged $25,000 for one student at each of these four historically black colleges which is chosen by the singer: Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman. The $100,000 total donated by Beyoncé was later matched by Google to include four more historically black universities.

In its promotion, Netflix also used greek-style lettering. Following on from the university-themed performance at Coachella, Beyonce released a range of 'Homecoming' themed merchandise on her website similar to what she wore on stage, which also featured the typography.

Let's also not ignore the bright yellow of the Netflix post. Remember, the outfits Bey and her team of musicians and dancers wore on the Coachella stage during their marching-band style performance?

A Beyoncé fan site also posted pictures on Twitter of an advertisement in Time Square, New York City, where the background colour of the promotional sign switches from yellow to pink - aka the other colour scheme Beyoncé went for during her performance.

What else do we know about the documentary?

According to Netflix, the documentary will drop globally on 17 April and is the works of Beyoncé herself.

The trailer shows footage of Bey behind the scenes in rehearsals for the Coachella performance, where her daughter Blue Ivy is seen helping her mum practice some of the dance routine. The trailer also provided us of glimpses of cute moments of Beyoncé with her husband Jay-Z and their one-year-old twins Rumi and Sir.

On Twitter, Netflix accompanied the trailer with the caption: 'An in-depth look at Beyoncé's celebrated 2018 Coachella performance from creative concept to cultural movement.'

The streaming service added that the performance would be 'interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision'.

Is this Beyonce's first documentary?

No! Fans might remember the 2013 autobiographical TV special Life Is But A Dream. The one-off film followed Beyoncé and gave viewers a glimpse into the notoriously private singer's life. Using some footage which Bey shot herself, she spoke candidly about her miscarriage, marriage with Jay Z, professional split from her father Matthew Knowles and her pregnancy with her first child Blue Ivy.

The documentary also showed behind the scenes and rehearsal footage from some of her best-known performances.

So, all that's left really is to get a similar glimpse into the historic Coachella performances one year on, right?

Fingers crossed!
